Strikes in Greece

Post by Mix on Tue Oct 18, 2011 2:18 am

I realise that this is not easy topic, so I dont want to pull politic side of it
But because all news over here are laconic about it, and most of material I can find online are complete nonsence written by foregin press I was thinking if you could post in this thread practical consequences of strikes ( road blocks, public transportation, fuel stations, and possibly places of protests), news are not by far accurate, and something what is first hand info is not published at all.
I realy dont want to be misunderstood, but recent blocade of border passings with fyrom, lead me to this idea, because I was planing visit for 100 year ПА anniversary, and little reunion with you guys Smile so I need to reconsider my possible means of transport

There are strikes almost every week, but never in weekends, so you will be able to visit and travel around between
5-8 of November where those day is the celebration of HAF. Some times on Mondays there are no Buses, metro but taxis are working. Some times everything is on strike. For November it's too early to say what will have strike, so we will inform you in the begin of the week. Which places are you going to visit?

I was thinking to go to Athens for a day or two before Tanagra for celabration, and one/two nights back in hostel in Athens(ok one in tavern drinks ) and back to Belgrade
I am not that spoiled, but uncertainlity wories me(well my pocket mostly) and I just want to know and consider my options
This sommer when I was passing trough Thessaloniki there was trafic jam because taxi drivers had protests.
That is not a problem, but last year my brother got stuck on Ionian coast because of truckers strike and shortage of fuel.

My main problem now is that no bus transport will sell tickets to Athens because of custom strikes on Gr-Fymac border, on Evzoni only pedestrains could cross
Train is not realy an option because there are no direct line(only to Solun/Thesaloniki) and if public transportation is not working I will get stuck in middle
Airplane is not realy suitable for one student(if you know what I mean Smile )
but some low cost airliners could do the job(trough rome some german airports or oslo) but AT control anounced that they will strike too

So I need you as my eyes on the field guys Very Happy

There is not direct line provided, only train to Thessaloniki and then I would have to find my way to Athens, that is last option because border police/customs between FYROM and GR is on strike for 10 days and maybe more after that so you can not cross the border except on foot, and there is a risk of greek public transportation strike, so I would got stuck in Thessaloniki
Train travels more than 16 hours from BG to THESS

I heard on the news this morning that unions announced three days total blockade
You might think that I am overreacting, but I just want to get some first hand info, and it is tricky to not have you options and get stuck in foregin country because I that stage last I cant let to run out of cash
