Sweden to Buy 60 Gripen E

Post by gvla on Thu Jan 17, 2013 11:55 pm

Today Swedish Minster of Defence, Karin Enström, announced that Sweden will buy 60 Gripen E fighter jets from Saab, says a statement issued by Saab.

Saab notes that the decision is within the span previously discussed, both by the Government and the Swedish Armed Forces, in order to meet future defence needs in Sweden until 2042.

This decision once again shows the broad support both from politicians and authorities for Gripen being the back-bone of Swedish air defence for many years to come. It is also proof that Saab has developed a high technology multi role fighter which answers up to defined needs on the market.

FMV has previously said they are expecting a development order for the next generation Gripen in the beginning of 2013. This means that Gripen will be the only next generation fighter which de facto is produced in the western world. This is a proof of strength that shows Saabs high level of innovation and technological competency.

We have held continuous and fruitful discussions with relevant authorities. These talks will now continue until there is a formal order in place.

Does anybody know what will hapen with those old A/B versions?
They should be modernised, but there are rumours that all of them will be scraped

Most probably will be offered to countries like Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia for a package that will be very atractive compare with the used F-16...

Yes, but until NG become operative airforce will be deprived of significiant part of its fleet.
I read one article where it is stated that a/b will fly until 2014.

Anyway, Romania already signed deal for one squadron of Portugeese F16 or should I say rip off because price is ineane, put aside training and ground infrastructure needed for operating.
Bulgaria have no plans in recent purchace of fighter jets, they say they can not fund for new Spartans(one of them have structural cracks)

And for Croatia, they are in worst position of all, they have only handfull airworthy jets out of 12-14total and they will go most probably to Ukraine for life extension.
They are speaking about Gripen for several years but they can barely aford mig21 overhaul.

Many would buy those Gripens, but money is an issue.
We would be happy with one squadron so we could finaly feel relief, and retire Mig21 after 50 years in service. But as for aviation in Balkans
