Serbia receives first Lasta basic trainers

Post by gvla on Wed Dec 21, 2011 4:55 am

The Serbian air force (ViPVO) has taken delivery of its first two Utva Lasta basic trainers, the service's commander-in-chief, Brigadier General Ranko Zivak, said on 9 December.

Designated the V-54 by Belgrade, the first production example for ViPVO arrived at Batajnica airbase in mid-October and will be handed over to 252 Training Sqn.
Brig Gen Zivak said its entire order of 15 aircraft is expected to be delivered by the end of 2012.

The Lycoming AEIO-540-L1B5D-powered Lastas are the first new aircraft for the Serbian armed forces since the last Utva G-4 Super Galeb jets were delivered around two decades ago. The entire order will be fulfilled as ViPVO gears up to celebrate its 100th anniversary in December 2012.

Serbia's examples are based on the P2 prototype and feature more modern avionics - using Garmin's G500 system - than the batch of 20 Lasta 95Ns previously delivered to Iraq.

ViPVO said the upgraded equipment will cut training costs.

The Lasta is equipped with two hardpoints and can carry unguided 57mm rockets, gun pods or "dumb" bombs.

Meanwhile, Brig Gen Zivak said that it is looking to procure a number of Mil Mi-17 helicopters, in addition to two refurbished models that were recently introduced to the service.

It is true that P2 prototype is better than Iraqi ones, but it is still far away from serious aviation industry which we used to have
At least it will be connection link for the future, and it is a miracle that it flew after this

Which Serbian forum?

That is complete most unlikely story.
Basicaly rumors are that they want to make LIFT version of NoviAvion(it is code name of project, I wrote about it back on PatricksAviation)

But, corrently we simply do not have all the assets to make it.
Only huge injection of money could make that plane fly, and question is who would be crazy enough to pay for it.

Institute who done whole research and development, the VTI still exists and all the documentation is perserved, but there is no factory which could make the airplane(Utva is heavily bombed, it is a miracle they make planes today)
Significiant number of experts left the country during the sanctions, and that is the main problem. Some of them used their knowelage to make some money(NA had eficient voice comand system) and others are working in aeroindustry in the west

VTI have several wind tunnels and other sophisticated equipment which can be used to make supersonic aircraft, and now it is used by Chinese to develop UAV`s, and by us to make rockets(anti tank such as Bumbar, and MLRS) and for modernisation of altilary shells(for B-52 Nora self propelled howitzer which is exported to 4 countries) and also for domestic Vrabac and Pegaz UAV`s and offcourse for Lasta upgrades and new COIN Kobac(as I wrote before there is rumor that UAE financed it in the first place)

So conclusion is that R&D facilities are there for most of the work, that same institute developed almost all our aircraft among them G-4 Supergaleb and J-22 Orao, much of the work for the NA is done, but there is simply no market for that number of aircraft for investment to pay off(only RViPVO made order for 150pieces at beggining of development) nor the facilities to take care of the job, nor the enough skilled and expirienced staff to finish it.

So bottom line it not gonna hapen unless someone is comleetly crazy drunken

I saw it in Tango6 blog and after searching found AirSerbia quoted politica newspaper [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] .Its a good sign they try to revive the project,or sell the technology developed. From discussions in "mycity" , i understood that you have the airframe, the avionics and weapons package would be foreign.Gripen made in Balkans, that would be nice Very Happy

So bottom line it not gonna hapen unless someone is comleetly crazy drunken
Sad

The new version of J-22,is it possible?I read you had a version almost ready before 1999 war.

Tango6 is a man who have psyhological problem because nobody wanted to play with him in kindergarden and huge complex geek so his writing is in "I know it all" style, but anyway it is not so bad when you filter it, also you can find some usefull info and photo/video

J-22 done its best when it needed, prooving that it was succesiful project, but now it is run over by the time and that concept is outdated.

There was single seater version of G4, made as light attack plane with radar and more poverfull engine, and your best neighbour wanted it bad

For NA
Basicaly, we wanted domestic airplane which should replace between 120 and 150 MiG-21`s and few dozens of J-21 Jastrebs.
We wanted not only a supersonic airplane(J-22 Orao was planed for modernisation with more powerfull engine and variable intakes) but true efficient multirole which should be quantum leap.

So there were some help needed, and few cooperation contracts were signed. Most perspective of them were with BAE(for Eurofighter expirience) and with Dassault(for Rafale expirience)
That kind of cooperation was called "tehnological support"
After some time of development VTI engineers concluded that French have advantage and engine should be Snecma M88 with Y sufix
Airframe should be mostly composite, with fuselage made of aluminium aloy and use of titanium in high stress areas

Attack navigational system, and control systems(fly-by-wire) are developed domesticaly.
Engine should be licence built as well as wepon systems and fire control avionics(including radar which should be some european in 60nm class)

It was final piece of puzzle to make army industry self sufficiant, among munition, guns, altilery combat vehicles, main battle tanks, submarines, ships, helicopters and training and attack aircraft, only supersonic figher was missing

We already had good cooperation with both British and French, and we made much of their hardware under licence, such as Rolce Royce jet engines and Gazelle helicopters in whole. But we maintained good relations with Russia too making considerably inprooved version of T-72 MBT the M-84 which was also exported, beeing that way pivoting point between east and the west

All in all that was ambitious project which would drew whole country forward and French intended to offer NA to countries which found Rafale too expensive

Maybe we could cut this off topic to another thread, so we could discuss about this project and meant to be airplane which will most probably never fly
